Sonic Sites Face Trouble with SimpleNet / Yahoo! Merge
Thanks to Shayne Thames, I have new information on this subject. NetRaptor has contacted Yahoo! about the matter and all sites under the original plan will continue to stay under that unlimited space plan. That means nothing will change. This reaction was also attached to the E-Mail:
This means that everyone can now RELAX. I think J.D. Harding just jumped the gun WELL too early in the scene without cold-hard facts. Simplenet KNOWS they be trampling over themselves if they were to make the customers convert on their own. And thank god because the following sites all depend on Simplenet or Simplenet related servers:
The Sonic Foundation (SonicFoundation.org)
Team Artail (TeamArtail.com)
The Dream Avenue (Dream-Avenue.com)
The Sonic Corner (Tolwyn.net/tsc)
SonicUnderground.net (su-tv.net)
NetRaptor’s Domain (NetRaptor.org)
—AtlantisCity.net—
Zone 9
Mute Isle
TLoB’s Sonic Site
—DreamTeamZone.org—
Sonic HQ’s SatAM video files
..in other words, a WHOLE LOT of Sonic Websites would be affected. But, thank God it won’t happen.
Now that these problems have been silenced for good, we will see what this new form of Simplenet will bring upon the Sonic Internet Community.
5/19: The Simplenet Crisis was one of the worst times in the history of the Sonic Internet Community. Now, Yahoo!, which owns Geocities, has now bought out Simplenet, and a few Sonic sites could be affected drastically. JD Harding posted the info on his website:
It looks like Simplenet sites across the net just got screwed. Yahoo! bought or merged with Simplenet recently, and they have changed their services. Now, Simplenet sites have space and monthly file transfer limits. The bulk of Tolwyn.net makes up 88.07MB, and Tolwyn.net is now limited to 250MB in total. Tolwyn.net is lucky it’s small in size. However, other Sonic Simplenet sites might be feeling the strain. Large art collections (think about TeamArtail) might be badly screwed by this turn of services. A large collection like TeamArtail.com could easily go over 250MB in size. 5,000 files multiplied by 50KB (normal art image size) comes to 250,000KB…(poor Artie), not to mention the fanfic section, and anything Artie has on his site that isn’t public. I hope no other Sonic Simplenet sites have been blindly hit by this…
Team Artail is in serious trouble especially, since it does indeed come close to the 250MB mark. But The Sonic Foundation, one of the Big 3, could be in for some problems, since there are now two services Yahoo! Website Services offer–the 250MB package, as mentioned above, and a 100MB package. tSf could easily reach the 100MB milestone if it has not already, and could soon make it to the 250MB mark. We’ll update the situation, as major effects could come out of this new restructuring process.
