Sonic Movie JP Dub Cast Announced

On Tuesday, Sega of Japan’s social media accounts announced the localized cast for the Sonic movie.

As has been in the case in several other territories including English speaking regions, the designated voice artist from the games will not have their services needed for the film. In Japan’s case, 21-year-old actor Taishi Nakagawa will assume the role. Kouichi Yamadera, who has regularly dubbed Jim Carrey roles for the country, will take on Dr. Robotnik’s Carrey.

That means Junichi Kanemaru, the longtime VA of Sonic in the games, will sit out. The 56-year-old voice artist has been the local voice of Sonic since 1998 across all Japanese media, going back to the release of Sonic Adventure. There’s been some speculation he didn’t want the role, but we haven’t been able to confirm that, and Kanemaru’s Twitter on Tuesday largely avoided the news.

Yuuichi Nakamura will dub Tom, and Marina Inoue will dub Maddie, according to our friends at Sonic JP News on Twitter.

From our understanding at this point, only Brazil will keep their longtime Sonic voice for the film’s localization. The film will release in Japan later than in most territories, at the end of March.
