Poll: 61% Say 2012 a Good Year for Sonic
Our annual poll taking the community’s pulse of Sonic has concluded. The results of the latest TSSZ @Issue poll still show most found last year a good year for Sonic, but the percentage is way down from past year.
A total of 974 votes were cast, and of those, 61 percent said it was a good year for the blue hedgehog. The remaining 39 percent voted no. That’s still a good amount of individuals on the positive side, but consider this: When we ran the poll last year, the percentage of yays was in the mid 90 percent tile. In 2010, the number was 91 percent.
Despite an array of titles made available last year like Sonic 4: Episode II, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and Sonic Jump, to go from what is essentially a mid 90s approval rate (which, arguably, may have been boosted by how well Sega handled Sonic’s 20th anniversary) to the low 60s is not a good sign.
Onward to 2013.
In terms of Sonic games, 2012 had the weakest lineup since either 2009 or 2006. As great as Sonic 4 Episode 2 and Sonic ASR Transformed are, one’s a not-stellar downloadable title and the other is technically not a “Sonic” game (It’s a Sega game).
I like every sonic game that has been released. i think we should take a step back and not be so critical and just enjoy what the game has to offer. =)
sorry i meant *games
The 61% who thought last year was good for Sonic are delusional. I’m sorry, they are.
The only good thing that came out aside from a clunky mess of a fighting game (Sonic the Fighters), the release of a mediocre sequel to the god-awful Sonic 4, and the re-release of a certain (and VERY overrated) game that started Sonic’s dark age (SA2), was a fucking racing game.
I know SEGA’s facing financial troubles but they better think something fast or they’re done.
@ Quiet guy
Well fuck you then.
anyway I voted yes on your new poll.
Jesus christ YES these comics need a reboot. PLEASE it does
@ Quiet guy
I mainly voted yes becuase I honestly thought the year was good. Sure little happened, but for what we got, which is one of the greatest Sonic games ever made (SA2) And..a meh fighting game, and an awesome racing game,
No need to call my decision delusional
Oh damn I thought sonic generatons was in 2012 but remember it was 2011 lol… Goes to show that the years do go super fast! It’s like If i remember it was just a couple of months ago the game was just released…can’t wait to see what Sonic game they have for us this year! Bit it is going be an awesome one again!…GOOD LUCK SEGA/Sonic Team!
@QuietGuy92
You are the delusional guy here. Of course the year of Sonic Generations would get a nicer vote. No matter which game do you release after that, a good Sonic retail title will always be better than anything else Sonic related. And on top of that, there was arguable the best port of a Sonic game: Sonic CD. It´s hard to top that, unless you want Sonic to become the next Call of Duty or Assassin´s Creed, which I personally wouldn´t want.
This year has gotten Sonic 4 Episode 2, which IMO is miles better than Episode 1. We also had Sonic Adventure 2, which you may not like, but was a great port comparing to many other ports out there. It´s still one of the best Sonic 3D games by many fans, so have a little respect for people whose opinion is different than yours. You can say what you want about Sonic the Fighters, but fans were happy when the game came out on Gems Collections years ago. It´s not a great game, but it came cheap and with some features that weren´t available in previous versions, how´s that bad??
And on top of all that, it´s Transformed. Which I would personally say it´s not a Sonic game, but IMO it´s the best we have seen using Sega IPs since about 10 years ago. Yeah, the game may have many bugs, but it´s a great title and it recognizes Sega´s past, something they don´t do often.
So IMO, calling 2013 a bad Sonic year is desilusional, when it has been the year with one of the best karting games with Sonic on it, two ports which are a lot better than previous attempts by Sega and one of them being a fan acclaimed title, and a better downloadable 2D Sonic game. Considering this should be the “cool down” year previous to another big Sonic retail title, it´s damn good, and better than most of what has happened from 2002 until now. That´s not desilusional, that´s being reasonable.
A good year? Um… there was one new Sonic game released in 2012, and it was only a “part” of a game. And it wasn’t spectacular.
I sided with yes, not necessarily because it was great, but because it wasn’t bad.
Even if you didn’t like Sonic 4, Episode 2 did some things better than the first one that helped it a bit, the re-releases were decent enough and sold significantly enough to guarantee a bit of a bright future for Sega, Jump came out of nowhere and was a pleasant surprise, even if it wasn’t necessarily stellar, and Transformed is an exceptional racing game that deserved more attention than it did.
If Transformed sold as much as it should have (that is at least the same amount the last game did), the amount of yes votes could have slipped into 70% category at least.
It wasn’t a BAD YEAR for Sonic…but it was a very meh year…
We got 2 ports, a decent sequel, and a fun kart racer. Following 2011’s Sonic Generations and Sonic CD ports, this year doesn’t hold a candle to it.
2012 was not really a good year for Sonic. Sonic 4 Episode II recieved average reviews and a LOT of fan backlash and Sonic Jump? Really?
There was only one decent game last year (ASRT) and even that flopped sales wise.
2012 was not that wonderful indeed.
I voted no, but only because there wasn’t a “meh” or “so-so” option. Sonic 4: Episode II was alright, and I still haven’t played All-Stars Racing Transformed, only because I don’t want to have to shell out money just to trade it back due to the game being hard-as-balls. This year was honestly not that eventful, at least in terms of the games. I’m hoping 2013 will be a lot better.
@Anon: Thanks, but no thanks. If the fanbase stops voicing their complaints and just takes every Sonic game regardless of quality for what it is, Sega, or rather Sonic Team will start to slip after years of trying to make decent games and to wipe the public’s memories of such atrocities as Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic 2006. If people have problems with a game they paid for, they have every right to talk about the issues they had with it.
2012 was pretty meh IMO. We got a mediocre follow up to Sonic 4, ports of mediocre Sonic games, and Sonic Jump, a minor mobile game. The only game that was worthwhile is Transformed. Although its nice to see they’re not forcing 3-4 Sonic games a yr anymore.
It depends on what perspective you see it in.
I voted that it was a good year because he appeared in brands like Hello Kitty, Disney, Nike, Progressive. More merch, more exposure. Having an exclusive iOS game that fits in the iOS gaming trend in our generation is also saying something. Where I live, EVERYONE has plenty of those type of games. Everyone knows Fruit Ninja, Cut the Rope and Angry Birds so Sonic Jump is a good start.
Btw, I surprisingly really liked Episode 2.
So I say, this year had more good than bad. 2011 and 2010 were better years in terms of titles and voice acting/script change. But in merchandising 2012 year was a good start.
I voted yes, and I’m not responding to the people who are insulting fans who voted one way or another. You guys are the reason the fanbase will likely never be like it used to be, NOT because of the games that have been released. Just please don’t infest your viral negativity at Sonic conventions or during SAGE and other uplifting/productive Sonic fan events, that’s all I ask.
It could have been a better year, but I, for one, loved Sonic Adventure 2, and am having a blast going back to it between work and Halo 4. Racing games are one of my favorite genres, and Transformed is definitely a beast to be reckoned with. Look for me on the Xbox 360 leaderboards!
@Jmack
I was going to make that exact same statement before I read yours XD
I personalty enjoyed Sonic 4:2 as well as All-Stars Racing Transformed, but to be honest, I am CRAVING a new full-out Sonic game. We got an episodic title, a racer that isn’t that much about Sonic, and an iOS game, and Sonic Jump, as good as it may be, is still a mobile game, and is only good for the on-the-go iPod gaming stuff. I’m not dissing it, but I want a true, big, real Sonic game!
The only way this year was good for Sonic is that it sets the expectations low so that next year will be better. :v
I say give it another game or so Shadow, but I kind of agree with some of your points. Almost all of those things bug the ever loving shit out of me too.
@Shadow
So…seriousness determines a good Sonic game? And Unleashed is where it started going downhill? Have you ever heard of Sonic 06′? Sonic was never meant to be dark or serious bro, so the goofy nature of the newer games work, it’s alot more tolerable than trying to take a anthropomorphic Hedgehog that runs at supersonic speeds seriously. The underlying themes of Sonic are serious…like saving animals from deforestation and industrialism…but the actual story and nature of the game itself was never suppose to be taken seriously.
^^^Theres nothing wrong with simplicity. When things become complex then it becomes hard to keep up with and it’s harder for a wide audience to join in because everything is convoluted from the get go. I believe Sonic is received better when you take a simplistic approach to it. Simple story, easy to play, yet complex underlying tones, and hard to master levels.
Yeah, fuck all the new Sonic games that don’t take themselves seriously and don’t have storylines that forced themselves to be hardcore and edgy and came out laughably bad because of it. Screw Unleashed, Colors, and Generations for having relatively simplistic plots that weren’t complex, because, you know, Sonic has never had simplistic plotlines in games. Nope. Never.
*ahemTHECLASSICSONICGAMES?!?!?!?!ahem*
So no mention Sonic cameoed in Wreck it Ralph. Not at all here. He was one of the ones who cameoed the most. Not the most but there was Eggman too.
@Amuro
XD I’m mean duuuuude rofl! I hear you though bro! I wish people would at least ATTEMPT to learn the franchises history!! We’re not playing Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy here!! (Not knocking those games but that’s the tone some people want…in a Sonic game :/ NO!)
