SEGA Sammy Confirms That Sonic Forces Sales “Performed Strongly”
SEGA’s parent company, SEGA Sammy, has released their financial report, a third quarter results presentation for the fiscal year ending March 2018. For the first time in a few years, SEGA has mentioned a Sonic game. Not only that, but they have mentioned the sales performance of one:
“SONIC FORCES,” which is a new title of a 3D high speed action game, performed strongly
The actual numbers weren’t given, but considering the amount of division that the game has gotten, it’s a surprise.

I’m really glad both Sonic Mania and Forces performed strongly, even the later since I really like the direction they took Modern Sonic with Forces, though even if it did well I hope Sonic Team address the criticism towards its flaws.
Yeah a dumbed down hyper linear version of Generations with worse controls, great direction.
“Sonic Team address the criticism towards its flaws.”
Sonic Team
Address criticism
LOL not gonna happen, post 2011 Sonic Team is beyond hope at this point, anyone who would make positive changes has either been reassigned or left Sega. Sonic Team refused to do a legit Generations 2 in the face of the embarrassing failure of Lost World and those Boom game they supervised instead made a game produced by 06’s director, if they were owned by any other publisher they’d be in the streets.
Forces took a step forward as far as storytelling and setting. But the recycled levels, questionable level design, and inconsistencies made an annoying, fun, semi-enjoyable experience. I loved most of the tag team and modern stages, like stage 6, and the green hill tag team stages were great. I want a whole game with that style of gameplay. And kudos for adding Shadow. Also. Less rails please
Agreed with everything you said, too many recycled stages, the new ones looked amazing though, hopefully they get Sonic Team main game designers back for the next game and add more playable characters, also maybe they could give Ian Flynn a chance at writing the story.
“Less rails, please”
Also, Tails’ characterization was lackluster. He went from courageous and clever hero to thumb-sucking bedwetter. That said, I love the thematic approach to Sonic Forces. Levels actually have a purpose with story imbued in them—a huge improvement over Sonic Lost World—just like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.
Yeah no, Sonic steam needs to stop this edgy story garbage. Didn’t work in the 90s, and it didn’t work in 2017 either.
“Didn’t work in the 90s…”
Yep, the classic games flopped and SatAM bombed. Sonic Adventure was also a disaster. That “edgy story garbage” is one the elements Sonic was founded on and was a big part of his presentation in the 90’s. I don’t mean to be rude, but are you actually a fan of the series?
I’m referring more So to the adventures games specifically Adventure 2’s story. You can have darker story elements sure, but Sega took it too far with Adventure 2. The story tried to hard to be mature and took all the joy and fun out of the atmosphere. It didn’t help that story in seemed like it was written by a 15 year old trying to sound cool. Unleashed probably had the best balance tone wise.
“but Sega took it too far with Adventure 2. ”
Yes, that is an opinion but you are in the minority on that opinion. Many non-Sonic fan gamers absolutely love Sonic Adventure 2 for its riveting, action-packed, grueling story. When I informally polled my university’s eSports club which is composed of upwards of 200 members, story and Sonic Adventure 2 were on the top of the list of suggestions for a Sonic game comeback. But you are totally entitled to your preferences. You don’t have to buy such a style if game should it be released in the future. Thanks for understanding.
I’m glad Forces performed strongly, I want Sega to bring us good games.
But on the other hand, I’m afraid that Sega will see it as a green light to keep bringing back Classic Sonic in front of Modern Sonic!
I do because I actually want Sega to actually bring us GOOD games.
^This. I want a modern Sonic game that stands on its own merits, not a hodgepodge of hedgehogs. Also, we need more playable characters than just Sonic, possibly including: Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Big, Eggman, Gamma, Silver, Blaze, Cream, Tikal, Chaos and Marine
Well keep in mind that opinions don’t always coincide with sales.
See ‘06. Over 2 million in estimated sales on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Even mixed critics don’t stop Sonic fans to buy average sonic games. I was disappointed with forces, released almost 6 years after generations and bringing nothing more interesting. Hope that the next big 3D sonic game will not release in 5 years to be a sonic Forces 1.5 …. the 3D sonic games need a revolution. I didn’t enjoy sonic boom Wii U, but at least it was trying to change things. Even lost world tried to slow down a little sonic’s rhythm to bring back more platforming action. I couldn’t really think myself a way to make 3D sonic games more interesting… homing attack kinda kills all the challenge cause you don’t have to aim at the enemy, but aiming in 3D isn’t easy… maybe some locking system a la Zelda could be OK. And enemies could block, dodge, use shields etc… which would make a different challenge when battling with the enemies than in 2D classic games.
Actually in some games you do aim. Just not precisely, hence where the homing comes in. But some games will home onto whatever’s closest. I think you should have to point in the direction of whatever you target and that the visual targeting icons should be optional rather than kept or taken away.
I think a lot more challenge can come from adding 3D momentum slope physics a la the fan game Sonic Utopia. Running around physics should be like that, SA2 or Lost World for precision and, IF the boost is added, the physics can change to feeling more like Generations while performing the boost, complete with quickstepping, drifting etc. And that a specific item box (like the White Wisp) should be what fuels the boost, only it’ll fill up only a portion of the gauge making you use it more wisely while trying to keep finding the item to maintain it if you want to. Also I feel like stage design should cater to the boost. I don’t mean by having a straight line of nothing. If there is ever going to be a corridor section then it should have a lot of obstacles for you to run through, kind of like in Unleashed and kinda like Generations. But there should also be parts of the stages that are optional, but require the boost if you go through them. Like a slope that goes up a wall so you can run up really high to get to a section you couldn’t without the boost. If it even curve back and shoot you back down to where you landed, so that you know you can’t push the entire time, rather only boost to go up and then let go of the boost so that the momentum can carry the rest of the way and you are able to see what’s coming and be capable of jumping to the side and catching the path you’re trying to get to instead of speeding past it and being taken right back to where you started. There could be parts of the stages that have treadmills attached to something and you figure out that if you boost on it, it’ll force the treadmill to spin faster and this overwhelming the generator it’s attached to so it’ll break or blow up and open a way for you to continue. You know just SOMETHING to make the boost useful on equal terms to the spin dash and homing attack. (Remember how you had to spin dash to move a pulley up or down in Lava Reef Zone? Similar concept)
In unrelated news SEGA of Japan has hired Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf as their Information Minister.
Just hire the guys behind Sonic Utopia, Green Hill Paradise, and Ian Flynn to write for the games. Also keep Whitehead around to evolve into a 3D game level designer (or just more level designers on the team in general. *sONIC FORCES* cough cough). Boom we just made a good 3D Sonic game. Bam. We’re done.
^This. Give the next 3D Sonic game the Mania treatment. Or give us a true HD recreation of the Adventure series, like what was done for the N. Sane Trilogy.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the game, but I appreciate the few things it did right. Namely, a bigger emphasis on story, the involvement of other characters, the Avatar customization, and the soundtrack. If Sonic Team can fully get its act together in the gameplay department and hire more than 3 level designers, the next game could be a hit.
I’m gonna wait until they reveal the sales numbers.
What were the numbers tho? Did it outsell Mania? Did Mania sell even better than Forces? These are the kind of questions that need to be asked, because Sega has always been quick to spin a financial success as a total success. At best, Forces is critically mixed all over the board, people either love it or hate it. What sells well is important, but what sits well with consumers after its bought is just as important, if not more so. Someone can correct me on this if I’m wrong, but I’m sure that Sonic 2006 sold pretty well right up until everyone started trashing it and Sega got too embarrassed to ever acknowledge it ever again for nearly 5 years.
Who is this report addressing? Obviously share holders. They don’t care about Sonic only money. Sonic Mania is it own thing and maybe the shareholder might see this but Sonic Forces Speed Battle might be another thing.
My guess is just a guess, from opinion, facts, bias, and agendas. I toss them aside. Subjective Objectivity. My goals, pure.
I think the Sonic forces Speed battle mobile game played a part in this report. During the sonic boom era there seemed to be no distinction made between the handhelds and consoles. It seemed to be treated as one game. If this is true, the second wind of the sonic team lies in the partners who gets exceptional results. The data of the partners and Sonic team are mixed and reported for one title and Sonic forces solely. This might explain Dimps final few handheld games
My guess is just a guess.
Resting in the partial truth
I looked both Forces and Mania up on SteamSpy, and saw that Forces had only 35,000+ owners while Mania had 145,000+ owners. Which makes me question the other platforms…
