Sega Invests in Music App Flutin

Sega has invested an unknown amount of money in India-based Flutin, a new startup mobile music app.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, Flutin emphasizes the spread of music from new, emerging, and independent artists, so don’t count on any Sonic or Sega soundtracks appearing there anytime soon:

Flutin’s business revolves around its music app of the same name, which uses AI to track users’ listening habits and recommend indie and emerging artists that will be of interest to them.

The app has been downloaded 9 million times, with 300,000 daily active users, and three million tunes streamed daily.

According to Sega investment director Toshihisa Kiyomiya, it’s part of a broader strategy to break into different markets:

Sega has often taken a broad view of entertainment, within and outside the gaming space, and looked for meaningful partners and investment opportunities [….] In markets like India and in areas like streaming music and music-based mobile apps, we see a great potential for growth and innovation, which is why we’re excited to support Flutin as it continues to create value for musicians and music lovers worldwide.

Sega may be looking to get a growing piece of the indie music pie, as independent artists are accounting for a larger share of sales in the music market these days.

Flutin will be using Sega’s investment to grow its userbase in the United States and around the world. The app is available now on iOS and Android.
