Roger Craig Smith Conducts Reddit AMA

If you frequent Reddit, you may have noticed that voice actor Roger Craig Smith conducted an AMA, or Ask Me Anything, on the site a few hours ago. Though many of the questions revolved around his work in the Batman and Assassin’s Creed franchises, several commenters also asked about his experience with the Sonic series, and here’s some of what we learned from his responses:

  • The two lines fans ask him to say most frequently are “Requiescat in Pace” and “Sonic speed!” One commenter’s reply to this revelation was too funny not to share: “Rodge, I wont lie, you have met some goddamn casual Sonic fans. The real answer should be ‘YOU’RE TOO SLOW’“
  • When asked “Who is your favorite Sonic Boom writer, and why is it Alan Denton?” by Alan Denton himself, he replied: “Hahahaha! I’d have to go with Alan Denton. Why? Just rugged good looks. And a sharp wit!”
  • He says it’s “sort of” weird to hear himself voicing Sonic, but he goes to say that “It never gets old to hear your own voice in a video game, though.”
  • He enjoys voicing Sonic in the games and the TV show in equal measure. “Being the blue blur is a blast in any medium.”
  • He recorded almost every episode of Sonic Boom with the rest of the cast as an ensemble. “So we had a ton of fun getting to work together – we’re all good friends outside of the show as well. They’re some of my favorite people.”
  • He played Sonic games prior to voicing the character; as a matter of fact, he claims to go all the way back to the original Genesis games. He has played “countless others” since then, including Rise of Lyric.
  • He was caught off-guard by being asked to provide Sonic’s voice in Wreck-It Ralph: “When my agent said ‘Disney wants to bring you in for some Sonic the Hedgehog,’ I thought, They’ve got the wrong guy! And Rich Moore (the director) – getting to meet him, and see how excited and passionate he was about the gaming world, made it that much more exciting. It was funny to have a guy like that say ‘I can’t believe we got Sonic the Hedgehog’ and I was like ‘Dude, I’m happy to be in here!'”

    2. I loved Ryan, though I have mixed feelings with Jason, in Sonic & The Black Knight I think he gave a fantastic performance, probably his best one, but in Sonic X he sound dull and emotionless the entire time.

      1. Eh, voice actor wars are pretty pointless in the Sonic fandom, so it doesn’t always bother me.

        Thought thinking about it know, I wonder why Tara Strong hasn’t voiced Marine the Raccoon yet.

        2. Tara Strong? I like her but would she really be a good Marine? There’s a voice actress credited as “Amy Rose” in the PS360 RPG Eternal Sonata (don’t play it, it sucks) who I think sounded perfect for voicing Marine. She voiced the character Salsa, who is actually a lot like Marine.

  2. Aww, he’s so adorable about it! It’s nice to have a guy like him be the voice of Sonic.

    1. Yeah, it’s so nice to have a voice actor who thinks Sonic is some self-absorbed old fart who never stop blabbering instead of a cool guy with attitude, but still caring.

      Oh wait……

      1. Dude. He didn’t write the script, he has to voice act what the writers write. Don’t blame him for the writing when that isn’t even his fault.

I think that’s hard to tell since he is just following directions though, all of his other characters are badasses (Chris Redfield, Siegfried, Batman, Ezio, etc.), if anything I think is Mike Pollock who thinks Eggman is a joke since most of his roles are either bad children’s shows or animes with kiddy dubs.

  4. That’s great! Smith is a pretty cool guy, super down to earth.
    Well at least for Boom, they record in groups. I hear it’s a lot easier and more fun and relaxing to record in together than apart. Also you get more natural reactions.

    1. Super down to earth ? More like clueless (whether purposely or unpurposely) to me, since he said Boom was “an opportunity to work with comedy” in an interview months before Boom’s release. So, what the Flying pan were Colors and Lost World ? 2EDGY4ME ? Please……

      They did nothing but rubbing that in our faces with that embarassing behind-the-scenes trailer with Travis Willingham saying “EYE TAYSTZ LIEK A FORTOON COOKIE HERPTY DERP”.

      And yeah, that way everyone can be as equally bored and annoyed while they state the obvious or do a contest at who shouts more random words in a minute.

      1. Over what? It’s one thing to be upset about the people involved in the franchise (which is understandable when they don’t quite know much about the source material), and it’s another to be “disgusted” over the people that enjoy the material they work on, especially one in which the TV series is being aimed for a younger audience. For someone who keeps calling others “manchildren”, you sure have you an attitude that reeks of one.

  8. Holy shit, 3 comments with nothing but utterly toxic, unwarranted character assassination of people you’ve never met, all based on pleasant answers from an AMA. I mean, it’s totally okay to not like someone’s work, but… why the whole “baby’s first attempt at ad hominem” attitude? If this angers you THAT much, just go punch a pillow or something for fucks sake.

    Also, I love the little “no offense” added near the end.

      1. LOL, Blaze has to be the less stereotypical character of the Sonic universe, he probably only knows her from Sonic 2006 and not from the Rush games.

        1. The ironic part is that Sonic 2006 is one of is favorite games. Maybe if he would just sit down and attempt at playing Rush, then he’d think twice.

  12. Dude you’re such a lame. What delusional world do you live in where you think any of the Sonic voice actors are phenomenal or the character of Sonic the Hedgehog himself in the games has any depth or layers? Sonic has went from “dude with a tude” to “Edgy” to “dull as hell” to “snarky”…oh and he cares about his friends. That’s fucking literally it. You’re looking WAY to deep into something that has NEVER been there.
