Report: Sonic Colors Never Passed 1M Sold in US
This is unsettling. Nintendo Power recently published a list of all million sellers for the Wii in the United States, and through both Mario and Sonic Olympic titles easily made the list, 2010’s Sonic Colors is noticeably absent.
Segabits was relayed the list via an E-Mail tip. The data indicated the original M&S has sold 2.12 million Wii units in the US, while the Winter Olympic follow-up has sold 1.34 million copies on the system.
Those are not necessarily fair comparisons, since the titles were released in 2007 and 2009, respectively. But compare Colors missing the mark to other Wii titles released around the same period. Epic Mickey was released in November 2010, has sold 1.52 million copies to date, according to the Nintendo Power report. Donkey Kong Country Returns, also released last November, has sold 2.35 million copies to date. And Michael Jackson: The Experience, which was also released last November and had aggregate review scores in the mid-60s, has sold 1.88 million copies in the US to date. Even borderline shovelware like Zumba Fitness: Join the Party from Majesco Games is in the millionaire’s club at 1.42 million.
If nothing else, one can conclude from the report that despite an uptick in quality, the Sonic franchise has a long way to go in the United States to restore its former greatness. Given how the Wii is typically Sonic’s strongest platform, it also may demonstrate Sonic Generations, an XBOX 360 and PS3 exclusive, has a lot to prove on store shelves once released next month. One could even point to this and reasonably claim it to be the reason the Generations Collector’s Edition is exclusive to Europe and Australia–why would Sega bother when they know there’s relatively little demand?
This will likely spark discussion, and we invite you to join in it below in the comments.
Uh oh.
I hope Generations does well.
SEGA Is ruled by little girls.
Collection edition to Americas….like,,,,now¡¡¡¡
This is a shock. I don’t quite understand why Colors didn’t make the list. Despite it being short, Colors is one of the best Sonic console games in quite a while…
Hey SEGA.
If Generations doesn’t sell well in the US, you know all those people saying they wanted a Limited Edition? Like we FUCKING BEGGED YOU FOR but gave to Europe instead?
Don’t say we told you so, then.
Colors would’ve sold more had Sega put MUCH better advertising, most people who own a 360 or a PS3 couldn’t afford to purchase a Wii, and we can blame Sonic 4 for the attention it never deserved. Such a god-damn shame. 🙁
Here’s hoping Generations does better with the HD and 3DS crowd.
if you look at vgcharts it says that Sonic Colors has sold 0.96 million copies. so it not to far from a million. no need to worry
A lot of friends that I have who casually play Sonic (are not major fans) tell me that since Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 06, and Sonic and the Secret Rings they do not want to give the series another try. Some them soley base their decision on Sonic based those games. And this really does sadden me because non of these people will ever get to experience the true sonic. And then I have the friends who keep telling me that games like Sonic and Mario are dead and Modern Warfare is the way to go now (and to backup their point they always make some crack about Sonic’s E rating and MW’s M rating, and how I should go with the M rated game since I’m seventeen and it will proove that I am an adult). I have come to the sad realization that most Sonic games will really only sell to the core fanbase now with perhaps a few people on the outside, mainly because the past medio core titles (the console ones released between 2005 and 2007) and the new fad games have eaten away at sonic’s popularity.
Hmm, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic colors have the same game-play.
Sonic Unleashed reached over 1M, and Sonic Colors didn’t. Let’s see the MAJOR difference.
~Sonic Unleashed has an interesting, edgy story with a COOL Sonic.
~Sonic Colors has a BORING/Repetitive childish story with a CHILDISH Sonic.
But yet, Sonic Unleashed was more successful, even though both games had the same game-play. Strange? I don’t think so.
Aw, for the love of Pete, Tristan, Colours did /very well/, even if it didn’t cross 1mil.
Nintendo Power’s list covered the mil’s, but it also covered the runner-ups. And Colours was a -really really good- runner-up.
Stop attempting to /drag us down/ as Generations draws near, man. Let’s just be /happy/ and /positive/ about this stuff for once, huh? I haven’t seen so many positive comments about Sonic for the longest time, and ever since Colours came out, me and my friends, and other fans listening in, /enjoy/ talking about the games again.
Seriously, man. Things are -not as dire- as most people would -prefer- to instinctively think.
Sonic’s gotten better, and he’s continually -getting- better.
So let’s stop being all humdrum about things and just enjoy the ride, and -enjoy the games-.
Because games are meant to be enjoyed. c: Not serious business.
To the common consumer, Sonic “Colors” looks like an exceptionally kiddie Sonic game. Many of our first impressions from the title reveal and first trailer was that this was going to be an unusually childish Sonic adventure.
Luckily we were proven wrong as we played it, but game sales still rely heavily on the impulse sale and most people probably passed it up because of its juvenile appearance.
It doesn’t surprise me, really. As many people as there are touting its quality, I don’t know that many that actually picked it up. Kind of an obvious marketing blunder on SEGAs part.
Heh, 0.96 million? That’s still pretty good. Sounds like it turned a profit.
Anyway, Sonic still sells quite well with kids, which makes up by far the biggest portion of sales for the series. He still has that edginess kids like while remaining totally family-friendly, so parents who are concerned with violence in stuff like Gears of War or Call of Duty but know their kids scoff at Mario or Pokémon will pick up Sonic. Heck, we have plenty of ADULTS who still like Sonic. (Trivia: Jaleel White continues to follow Sonic to this day.)
And when you get even further down, the gamers a bit more casual than the ones described directly above ARE still into Sonic. When I was in Santa Cruz, I met a handful who came into the franchise through Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic and the Secret Rings.
There is a gap in demographics, however: Young adults who grew up with the 16-bit games and feel permanently disillusioned by it. SEGA knows this and also knows that since they’ll never be satisfied and have stopped paying attention to any of their marketing, they don’t bother trying to sell to this audience.
I don’t believe it.
Literally, this is a big lie.
@AM I’m REALLY sorry for saying this but your friends sound like a bunch of idiots when it comes to the Sonic franchise and video games. They sound like a bunch of ignorant 14 year olds who won’t give any other games a chance except for repetitive games like modern warfare. And don’t worry becuz I have some friends like that too, and I constantly call them out on their stupidity. Sonic, Mario, donkey kong, Pac man, etc has open up lots of windows and has introduce the world to all kinds of possibilities in video gaming. Ppl should learn how to appreciate the classics foe what they’ve done. Modern warfare is goin to die off waaaaaaay before Mario and Sonic ever will
@ Tony
Well said, 960,000 is nothing to sneeze at, and the fact that Sonic is a least selling well in Europe and Australia is still a sign of progress for the blue blur. Maybe part of the reason was the fact the game was only available on the Wii. Hopefully the release of Generations on 360 and PS3 will help boost sales.
Agreeing with Tony here, Tristan stop sensationalizing everything for page hits. We’ve been over this.
Not everything is a big deal, alright? Slow news day or not.
I was gonna go off on a bunch of you, but then decided against it. +1 internet for me.
;C how dissapointing, Colors is such a great game, I just can’t believe it…. I really wish SEGA the best with Sonic Generations, hope it does sell well <333 guess this is probably the reason why the CE didn't make it to US… oh well.. 😀 I am ready for Sonic Generations ^^ I'm sure it'll be a great game!!
@ChaoticFox do it!!!!
Yeah, the lack of advertising the game had is probably the biggest reason for this, and it is a pretty big shame when you compare it’s marketing to S4Ep1’s, and considering which one was praised as the best Sonic game in 18 years.
Still, it did do extremely well and sell 1.85 million (something like that, right?) in the first two months of it’s release, with who-knows how many more in this year since then. At least he’s still selling really well for now, alongside the jumps in quality he’s having!
This is music to my ears =D because colors wasn’t even that good it had boring gameplay , no useful unlockables , Nothing was fun about The Sonic Robolator the only thing that had to offer was a wasted space of playable robo sonic clones instead of sonic’s friends. Colors is a disgrace to the Modern Sonic Genre.
@ManicTheHedgehog I really hope you’re bein sarcastic.
@ManictheHedgehog
Dude, Colors is the best Sonic game since SA2 and you’re just a waste of time as well as being an ignorant troll who only craves attention.
Considering I went out of my way to get three copies of this game (one Wii version for me and my bro, and a DS version) this actually kinda annoys me. S’wrong with you gaming public?
Come on Colors has sold more than 2M around the world so that’s something.
Well yes year 2 games Roger Craig Smith starred in as a voice actor were Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood as Ezio Auditore and Sonic Colors as Sonic, and both came out on.. what.. November 16th or something? (Ironic huh?)
Well I had pre-ordered AC:B and GameStop called me to invite me to a pre-midnight release event or something. At midnight I got my copy and then realized Colors came out as well and asked if I could get it too. They said yes and I got it. But it’s not like there was a Sonic Colors even the way their was for Assassin’s Creed.
Well this year is different. I’ve pre-ordered Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Sonic Generations, and I stopped by there yesterday to find large posters of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Gears of War 3, Batman: Arkham City and 2 posters of Sonic Generations.
lol Actually I only saw one poster of Sonic Generations at first but it only had Modern Sonic and I told my bro’s gf how that was odd to me since a major focus was on there being 2 Sonics. Then later I noticed on the other wall there was another poster exactly the same but with Classic Sonic. It was the first time she, my brother and their friend actaully realized up-front the difference between Modern and Classic Sonic. (And luckily there was SA:DX and Mega Collection on the shelf next to me to point out what the actual original artwork of the 2 looked like to prove they were different. lol)
“the Sonic franchise has a long way to go in the United States to restore its former greatness. Given how the Wii is typically Sonic’s strongest platform,”
Uh no. I think it shows that the Wii is no longer the strongest console considering Unleashed’s 2.45 million and Sonic 4’s “Well over a million” yeah they were multi console but still. If anything a true test of the Sonic franchise will be Sonic Generations. There’s not doubt that Sonic isn’t a big or relevant as in the 90’s, but this game is one that will, even if only for this game, be that relevant.
wait, a dancing game about Michael Jackson sold more than Sonic Colors?….at this point, money just goes to the biggest name, im not even surprised anymore. But you do bring up a good point, Tristan. Sonic over here is immensly unpopular, and even if people rarely talk about it, they talk about the classics they played as kids. Why make a package that almost no one is going to buy? I mean, I’m gonna buy Generations day one, but no way would i get the collector’s edition, it just costs too much.
I blame piracy.
The game was widely leaked on the net before it was even released officially.
*sigh* A shame… This was, by far, the best Sonic game I’ve played since Adventure 2.
I guess because sonic colors was only for wii and ds and people didn’t think it was gonna be a good game. 🙁
@Jack Doesn’t matter if no one knows about it.
I guess that’s understandable~
Blame Sega for overhyping Sonic 4, more than it didn’t deserve.
Two things:
1. Critics wise, Colors is nothing but an average game, nothing special. It has done better than Unleashed and previous titles in recent years. Fan acclaim has been a lot better, but yet the game still hasn’t sold that great. This ought to be a nice wake up call for those who say Sonic games will sell much better if the reception for them is good as opposed to bad like other recent stuff. Reviews and fan opinion only effect so much of a game’s sales, so I think Colors didn’t sell well because it simply lacked public appeal. Not to mention it was never heavily advertised.
2. I didn’t buy Colors. I found little of anything remarkable or note worthy about Colors prior to its release. I still got to play the game by renting it via GameFly, and I am happy to say that I am glad I did not buy the game. It is a Wii game of full price, but you’re only getting five hours worth of content. And despite the length, it was never anything more than an average game. Not groundbreaking in the slightest, hardly challenging or innovative, and just was all in all a really dull experience. Hardly worth replaying once you beat the storyline. I feel the game was rushed so they could focus more on Generations, which in my mind is a blessing.
If you liked Colors that is fine and all, but don’t judge me for disliking it. I for one am not surprised by its unimpressive sales. It came out at a time where far better games were out. I hope more effort is evident in Generations.
@Renzy
I totaly agree, my friends tend to be quite ignorent, and I am sure hoping that people will get tierd of this COD stuff (hopefully it will happen soon, I just looked at MW3, and it appears that nothing has changed, I do not know why people are still routing for it).
@darkgomugomu: you do realize that anything michael jackson will inof itself print money right?
Remember what happened in 1986? The master system was released, with very little advertising, and was unsuccessful in the US. This is Sonic Colours. (with a “u” Americans!) Remember what happened in 1989? The Genesis was released with TONS of advertising, and sold very well. This is Sonic Generations. That is all.
It probably wasn’t marketed well enough, combined with Sonic’s rocky history. I expect Generations to sell well if they market it hard.
@ Bob the Goldfish
Love you’re name. It appears we are gamers of the same 16-bit generation ^_^
I didn’t play Colors, because I own a 360. I was upset because I heard good things on the Sonic sites. But it’s true that if I actually think back, I didn’t read rave reviews in less biased general gaming magazines.
Generations seems to be getting a lot more buzz from the Non-Sonic fanbase, so it could be that this game is way better than Colors, as much as the hardcore fanbase may have enjoyed that game.
Not too surprised, Sonic Colors was a Wii exclusive, and Sonic and the Black Knight was also a poor-selling Wii exclusive. People still have bad taste in their mouths from games like Secret Rings and Sonic Unleashed, I think if those games were better, Colors may have looked more appealing. Also, it came out around the time other big titles came out. I still wish this was also on PS3/360 since I rarely touch the Wii these days.
Every time I see Colors on store shelves I want to buy it all over again, hoping to recapture the magic. I guess maybe I should XD
@ChaoticFox
…The only way you can recapture the magic is by buying the game again, even though you already have a copy…?
I didn’t think people would spend money like THIS of they had it. XD
I’m keeping my head high for Generations. Sonic Colours had a shit advertising campaign, there were only about 4 or 5 adverts on a day. Compare that to Generations, where they’re sponsoring the fucking Simpsons. Plus, Generations has amazing attention, much more than Colours did.
I find these results sad. It’s the best 3D Sonic game in 10 years. But like I said, SEGA need to stop crying over poor sales and start realising that they need to do they’re market research.
Hold out a lot of hope for Generations – I have a very good feeling for that one.
And so what if Sonic is hated in the US? He’s treated well here in the UK because SEGA, for some reason, can’t be bothered to waste their money on advertising campaigns over there. It’s not the US fault, blame SEGA. They need to stop crying about marketing fail and actually realise why he’s hated in the US.
This game didn’t make the list because quite frankly, it sucks. Sonic 4 is the best Sonic game to come to consoles since SA2, and while Generations will be decent overall, probably still won’t match Sonic 4 in terms of quality. And the worst part? Sonic 4 wasn’t anything phenomenal itself. The whole series needs a reboot with a completely new developer (and direction at that). Sonic Team just fails at almost everything. No trolling, just telling it how it is.
*Disappears before the hordes of fanboys attack all at once*
@Ceejus I’m not even going to go into a decent explanation as to why that is wrong. Sonic’s had his downs, but seriously, just because he’s had a bad past does not mean he will have a bad future.
*Disappears before troll attacks me* I can dothat too XP
Umh Ceejus, Sonic Colours is one of the few new Sonic games that the so called proffesional reviwers liked. They liked Sonic 4 too, but Sonic 4’s physics are so damn horrible! While Sonic Colours physics and the gameplay itself is much better. The problem I had was that the Wii controls sucks and Colours would’ve been a way better game on PS3 and 360, only because of the controls. But you know, that’s your opinion and if you think it sucks, well I don’t care cus you have the right to have your opinion. Anyway, most reviwers and other people thought that Colours were a step in the right direction(Even though the Unleashed gameplay was it, but they don’t think of it that way cus they hate the werehog), so I don’t think it’s because the gameplay is bad. It’s because people don’t want to give Sonic one more chance, bad advertising and some other factors.
hahaha oh my good gracious. Can we just ban Ceejus already? Like, can we take a vote?
Not even 1M sold? I guess there is your reason the US doesn’t get a collectors edition of Generations.
We should be allowed to vote who we want to be banned.
Ceejus is allowed to voice his opinion here, just as everyone else here is. Let him be.
-T
What? That doesn’t seem right….
I second what Tristan said.
It’s not his opinion that’s the problem
I actually think Sonic Unleashed was the best Sonic game since SA2 and Colors just improved on it. In a weird way I actually like Sonic Unleashed more than Colors, don’t get wrong I LOVE colors but Sonic Unleashed is soo good to me. I even love the Werehog! His combo upgrades and beat’em up style gameplay, the nighttime settings and his platforming were very enjoyable in my opinion. And Unleashed was pretty damn hard too xD not to mention I love the HUB worlds(especially Spagonia and Apotos) and the music was fantastic! It’s a shame that a quality game like Colors didn’t sell over a million but that shouldn’t really effect Generations sells.
That is why I buy the game and don’t pirate it. :p
@Ceejus, RealSonic, and Kit Cat
In descending order, those are three of the dumbest comments I’ve ever heard. You trollin’ right? How u do dat?
Sonic Colors was a boring game.
It had a stupid story. Sega needs to return to the epic storylines that Sonic Adventure 1&2 had.
Also people are tired of playing only as Sonic. They want to play as Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge, and Omega, not just Sonic.
@Candy Andy
Adventure fanboy, huh?
This is probably why they’re doing so much advertising this time around.
@Candy Andy
Speak for yourself lol. Also i liked Sonic Colors story, it was much more appropriate for the series, not like the melodramatic stuff that so many post Sonic Adventure games had… None of which I found the least bit interesting btw.
Seriously ST this isn’t Final Fantasy, its a platformer, so lets back to the actual platforming! Put down the guns, stop the beastiality and make a goddamn Sonic game again!
Which they did, with Colors 🙂
uh that’s sad and dissapointing, considering that Sonic Colors is much better than Epic Mickey and every Mario&Sonic game :/
@Candy Andy
I really don’t want to play as Rouge OR Omega ever again in a main series game. Rouge was good in SA2 for me, but I hated her in Heroes. I liked playing Omega in Heroes, but I hated (it?) in Sonic 2006. I like playing just as Sonic, but I also like playing as others like Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze, and (maybe) Silver. I don’t really care for the stories anymore but I think you should be able to skip cutscenes if you don’t like the story. Which is one thing Shadow did wrong and one of two things Sonic 2006 did right. xD
The Adventures had their own serious stuff into it, but at least they made the story entertaining (in my opinion). They can return to it, but I doubt they’d be able to recreate it successfully, especially after two attempts (Shadow and Sonic 2006).
I only slightly miss playing as other characters. To anyone who says “everyone is getting sick of playing as just sonic,” I would say, most of the sonic fanbase disagrees with you.
Part of the problem with the Sonic fanbase is that most of the fans try to speak for each other….Really guys…one word rebuttal. STOP! We can speak for ourselves. Secondly. No sonic game is ever going to please every fan at once. Don’t judge each other.
And third? Voicing facts vs voicing opinions…Or should I say…voicing opinions as if they were facts.
A fact is “sonic colors sold under 1M copies in USA”
An opinion is “I think Sonic generations was a better game for a few specific reasons.
A trolling statement is “Sonic 4 was better than any Sonic game in every way shape or form”
Saying something like the third statement when statistics show that huge portion of the fanbase made of real world people, including professional gamers disagree with you is just flamebait. I’m a voice of SEGA Sonic Radio. I see this every day in multiple communities. The reputation that the Sonic fan base has gained is sickening. And as soon as the right people learn the differences in speech to be able to hold an intelligent conversation or debate (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!), the tolling statements will stop.
Can I get an amen?
The way some Adventure fans talk, it makes me wish the games had never been made in the first place. I’d rather be short two good games in Sonic’s history than have to listen to such moronic nonsense.
Le sigh. I suppose it’s an inevitability with such a large fanbase that you’re going to run into more than a few nutjobs with a few screws loose. Not everyone can have good taste 😉
Did they really even advertise Colors?
@RealSonic: You can’t compare Sonic Unleashed with Sonic Colors. Unleashed was on five different systems, from current generation to last. Colors was on one and still managed to scrape together a hair under a million.
Also… you thought Unleasheds story was edgier? It was as childish as anything. Not necessarily saying that’s bad – yeah, I know, liking the story of Sonic Unleashed ruins my cred as a Sonic fan – but edgy it wasn’t.
@Haru: The people who care about collectors packages aren’t likely to boycott the game outright, not to mention they’re in a small enough number that they don’t particularly matter in the grand scheme.
@Cdrom1019
Amen, brah, Amen.
I actually do miss playing as other characters, I’ll admit. Playing as just Sonic has certainly had it’s appeal for a while, but now I think it’s time to move on from that. The playable characters were far from the problem (when you could choose who you wanted to play, of course; SA2 pissed me off by forcing me to play who they wanted me to play, so I’m not saying it was ALL rosey).
@dl316bh
It kinda sucks that there are only around four (I think) main Sonic games that you can choose who you want to play. Correct me if there are more but these are the ones I have encountered: Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic&Knuckles, and Sonic and the Black Knight.
That is one of the problems.
The fans being heard kept saying we don’t want to play as the other characters. They:
– Didn’t want to do Hunting/Shooting stages in Sonic Adventure 2
– Didn’t want to play as every team in Sonic Heroes
– Didn’t want to be forced with default partners in Sonic Heroes
– Didn’t want to be forced to play as Shadow or Silver in Sonic ’06
– And similar stuff
Games like Sonic The Hedgehog 2, 3 Knuckles, Advance 1, 2, and 3 did it right.
– You don’t have to play as Sonic & Tails, you could have been Sonic or Tails in STH2
– You can play as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles (and Sonic & Tails) in STH3
– You can play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy in SA (unless you want the Extra Zone)
– You can play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Cream in SA2 (unless you want Amy)
– You can play as Sonic or Tails in SA3, but you can get Knuckles, Cream, and Amy later on.
No one seems to remember that these games barely forced you to play as the others. First thing that comes to most players minds are “I don’t want to play as Big”, “I hate shooting levels”, I hate using Silver”, and “I only want to be Sonic”. If everyone was optional (Like “he” was in Sonic Colors), then there would be no reason to complain. Being invincible is fun just like Flying, Gliding, and an Immortal Chao.
I also miss multiplayer with the other characters. Racing Sonic as the much slower Blaze, gliding on Knuckles back as Cream, or using a second controller to control Tails was fun. I still have fun with the games nonetheless 🙂
tl;dr version: Make the characters playable like how Luigi was in Super Mario Galaxy, or like Rolly, Chick, and Bantam in Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. Make them optional.
Aw, that’s too bad. I loved Colours. Alot. Oh, well.
They might be trying to get around that with a PS3/Xbox360 port of Sonic Colours (which I’d personnaly love to see happening).
The House of the Dead Overkill, which was at first a Wii exclusive, sold even less than Sonic Colours and it’s going to get a PS3 port with more bonuses in it.
We shall see in 2012 I guess
@Miraclechao
Your comment shows some good sense. Well-beloved characters like Tails, Amy, or Knuckles
should be playable again AS WELL as being optional. So here’s my solution:
Let the others travel through the same levels as Sonic but they can use their own abilities to open different areas within that level (S3K got it right, so did the Advance trilogy while the Adventure games did that to a minimum) & cut out the emerald-hunting for Knuckles, make sure Tails stays as FAR AWAY from a mech suit and leave that only to Robotnik, and I’m glad there’s NO more fishing with Big (the only BAD part about SA1).
And some multiplayer would be nice (wish that was in the console version of Generations).
@shane
You do realize that last year, Tristan gave Colors a “4 stars out of 5” score, right?
Shane and his aliases are ban-dodging from last week, so I’ve removed posts from the corresponding ISP.
-T
@sonichedgehog: I count Sonic Adventure in the “choose who you want” section. You could play who you wanted at any time and if you just wanted to play as Sonic, you could through the whole thing. The only thing you needed to beat every story for was the final story, but that wasn’t really necessary and I kind of saw it as a bonus that wrapped up the rest of the games loose ends; the way Sonics story played out felt like a full game, along with the difficult final boss and Eggmans defeat, so it felt like the story could have wrapped comfortably there.
@shane: I never wanted them all to go away. At a certain point, however, some characters are just unnecesary. Frankly, unless the character has a radically different new gimmick that alters the playstyle, no one is necessary past Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy.
As for Colors never coming to HD consoles, I wouldn’t rule it out entirely. It’s entirely up to Sega. If they changed their minds, they could do it. Hell, more than a few games popped up on the PS3 after originally being Wii exclusives. See Dead Space Extraction, which as I recall sold poorly, eventually being ported to the PS3 after Move became a thing. I think they even bundled it in some limited edition with Dead Space 2.
The hell, I bought 6 damn copies of Sonic Colors >:(
@ dl316bh
The way the Sonic Advance series and Sonic Rush series did it was good.
While Blaze and Cream are alternate (and imo better) version of Sonic and Tails, a little tweaking could fix that. I guess make Blaze jump shorter than Sonic, and Cream’s flight like Brawl’s flight characters (Use her ear like an airplane/jet instead of like wings) or make her get tired from flight much quicker (already shorter than Tails flight iirc).
Speed Paths (Paths that only Sonic and Amy can take due to being about to perform well timed tricks off of rails), Flight Paths (Paths high enough that only Tails and Cream can take) and Power Paths (Paths that can only be Bounce Attacked/Drill Clawed or punched/hammered) would help even things out. Maybe remove the Speed Paths and give Sonic the Barrier Power-Ups so he can take the other paths making the other characters optional/Sonic the best choose for a Speed Run.
It can be like:
– Sonic can use Barrier Powers (Double Jump, Fire Dash/Fire Boost, and Bounce Attack)
– Tails can fly higher, farther and longer than Cream, and he can swim
– Knuckles can glide, climb, swim, and take power paths, but can’t jump high
– Amy could probably be the same as Sonic, just slower and jump higher
– Cream can fly and use Cheese, but gets tired (maybe even drown) faster
– Blaze can hover and use the Fire Barrier power by default, but performs bad underwater
I just want to play a game like Sonic Advance 3 again. Multiple characters, multiple players, co-op, and versus. Still waiting for Tails, Knuckles, Cream, and Amy as playable in a Sonic Colors like game, while still playing Sonic games 😀
@ dl316bh
Also No More Heroes move to the PS3 as well when the Move came out.
@dl316bh
While I’m down for having optional characters in a game like S3&K, I have to disagree with you that Sonic Adventure did it successfully. Sure you could go through Sonics story without touching anyone elses, but thats hardly value for money, since it can be done in 1-2 hours.
Also the story never felt complete when you just did Sonic (Chaos only reaching 6 Emeralds and dying?). So you can be deprived of the ending and stop playing (after very little playtime probably) or suffer through the fishing, shooting, hub worlds and treasure hunting…
Thats 3D Sonic gamings problem in a nutshell for me. About 1/6th Sonic, about 5/6th lots of non-Sonic stuff.
@Gooch
Pretty much. In Unleashed you only had 2 characters but because of the sheer length of the levels you ended up playing twice as much Werehog.
I don’t mind the other play styles so much, but it feels like no one is paying attention when they plan these games out.
@x
Yeah I remember it was always said it was going to be half werehog, half regular Sonic, which is true in terms of the amount of stages, but in total playtime? I’d say 45% werehog, 45% hub-worlds, 2% Tornado missions and about 8% regular Sonic…
I realised this after running through all the Sonic stages consecutively in about 30 minutes, and yet Unleashed’s campaign is roughly 10 hours!
