PS2 Launch Part 3: A Ray of Hope
First, IGN PS2 has admitted some major problems with PS2 launch titles graphically. Here is just a small snippet of that:
One of the most commonly heard moans from the PS2 development crowd is the machine’s lack of texture RAM. And judging from the first crop of titles, cramming tons of high-resolution textures into the Graphics Synthesizer is simply not feasible; a good percentage of Ridge Racer V’s backgrounds feature repetitive and slightly blurry textures, while the Gran Turismo 2000 demo can’t hold a candle to the Dreamcast’s Sega GT, when it comes to the clarity of trackside textures.
If you can’t do textures, forget about polygons. This is even better news for us Sega fans. Finally (and this will hopefully conclude our PS2 coverage), Sega’s stock is up 6.85% in Japan, following a Sony drop, coming right at the PS2 launch. Hmmm…I wonder if the fact that the number of consoles that were sold had anything to do with it? Sony might be on a falling trend right now, but if public demand gets any more in Sony’s favor, this could get interesting @ the domestic PS2 launches. Stay tuned…
