OpenSonic comes to the Dreamcast
Coming to us from a post on Sonic Retro is word that user NeoBlast has ported the open-source Sonic game “OpenSonic” to the Sega Dreamcast. More details are available on Dreamcast.es, a Spanish Dreamcast homebrew website. For those of you who don’t speak Spanish, there are links to automated translators on the right hand side of the screen in order to convert the website to english.
OpenSonic tries to replicate the classic Sega Genesis Sonic games, with a twist: in similar fashion to The Lost Vikings, a single player can switch between controlling Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, and certain obstacles can only be overcome using teamwork. Though the physics and the camera could definitely use some work, I had fun completing the levels provided with the release. The game also features a level editor, for those of you who wish to make your own OpenSonic levels.
If your Dreamcast doesn’t work anymore (mine’s not in the best condition) or you just don’t own one, that’s okay – being open-source, OpenSonic exists on plenty of other platforms, including Windows and Linux. There’s plenty of information about OpenSonic (including tutorials on making levels) at its official website on SourceForge, which is located here.
