Nintendo EU Presser Claims All 3 Exclusive Sonic Games Out in 2013
A Nintendo press release published on German website Spindash.de, when translated, claims all 3 Nintendo exclusive Sonic games are set for this year.
This includes Sonic Lost World, which is apparently being treated as one title despite two separate releases on the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS. We’ve published an excerpt here; it’s the last sentence we’ve bolded that is of note, as it says in German the three games will be available during 2013:
In a way, this also clarifies the release timetable for Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games as that too is now assumed to release before the year is out. However, if all three or even two out of three release too close to one another, is there a danger of cannibalizing sales? That remains to be seen with release dates not yet finalized for anything. And what about that third Sonic game? Andrea Gil has already relayed from her sources what it may be in an earlier report.
Guessing we’re going to find out in 12 days. I cannot wait.
Why is SEGA pressing this series so hard all of a sudden? Ain’t they got better to do? (House of the dead revive)
Considering the fact that Lost World is pushing me into buying a Wii U (and that I have no present desire to purchase either of the other two consoles), I actually find this incredibly disappointing and almost concerning.
I too worry about cannibalizing sales (not to mention hugely divided advertising) Considering what we know, it’s almost guaranteed that all three games will be released Holiday 2013. That just screams bad business, especially with the exclusivity meaning that a lot of people will be spending their money on the console, leaving them with a lot less cash to go toward other games.
Part of me feels like this should be exciting news, but it really isn’t. Maybe when that third game is announced, I’ll change my mind.
I agree with you. Nintendo is also planning on releasing a new 3D Mario game and Zelda WW HD at around the same time which may cause these Sonic titles to not experience their best sales potential (especially since all three are being released in the same period as well). After all with games being as expensive as they are now, I can really only see parents and average gamers picking up 1-3 titles for the entire holidays.
It might be best to wait for reviews first, if the game ends up being bad then you’re stuck with a console that hardly has anything else going for it.
It’s Nintendo. The absolute king of fantastic first party exclusives. It may not have anything NOW, but it’ll have more eventually, no question. Not worried at all. I got my money’s worth out of the original Wii and I own hardly any third party games for it. Also, Bayonetta 2. ALL I NEED.
Honestly I figured it would be something like this. Its pretty typical, really. One new main Sonic game (Lost World), Mario & Sonic (four times now), and a new Sonic spinoff to go along with it. Not really all that surprising. Its possible one of them will be 3DS exclusive, but it doesn’t seem to be the case at this point.
These are my top 4 bets for the third game:
1- New Sonic & Sega All-Stars (a fighting game or a new sport).
2- Sonic Chronicles 2 (the first already was a Nintendo exclusive)
3- Sonic 4: Episode III (the most unlikely because the previous 2 were multi platform)
4- Spin-Off of another character (Eggman, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Blaze).
I don’t think is a story book game cause we already have an action-adventure title for this year.
@ChaoticFox –
Sonic Lost World should still have it’s own charm and attract recent Sonic fans (that have bought Colors and Generations).
Mario and Sonic Sochi should sell on it own, considering the fact that it’s a million-seller game.
Since the third game is also coming out this year, it leads me to believe that the game will be Mario and Sonic Kart (Mario Kart is a multi-million seller). There’s no way SUMO would be working on the game, because they got done with Transformed a few months ago, and I doubt they could make ANOTHER Sonic racer with Mario in just a year.
Plus, you might say that it is worrisome for all three of the games to come out in the coming months, but I think it is a fine idea. The Wii U needs games, and these three titles should help boost interest for the Wii U somewhat.
What do you think?
They’ll all sell well, but they probably won’t sell as well as they could if released separately.
Sochi will have the longest legs and continue selling well all next year, so that’s no big deal. But during the holiday season, a lot of people are going to have to choose which game they buy, since they likely won’t be able to afford all 3 (especially if they’re new Wii U owners). This means that a lot of the younger kids crying for a Sonic game for Christmas will only get one, and with Sochi being the most popular with families, it’s likely to get more of those sales (thus taking away from potential sales for the other two titles)
It’s not going to bankrupt them, but it’s not a smart plan. They’d be better off saving Sochi until early next year, partly because it will be more relevant, but also so that Holiday sales can go toward the other two games, since Sochi won’t need them and will sell like hotcakes regardless.
a Mario+Sonic kart sounds legit. And nice too.
I know a lot of things that can be mutually beneficial between these two franchises.
As far as characters go: Sonic side could learn from Mario by reviving obscure characters (Funky Kong for example).
On the flipside, Mario side could learn from Sonic side, to add diversity (and not add Baby Waluigi, Baby Birdo, or some other weird stuff)
As far as mechanics go, we could end up having HOVERBOARDS as an optional vehicle!
We coud have a better boost and drift system.
We could have retro revival levels, and perhaps one super epic crossover level “Rainbow Emerald Road”.
Fighting would be awesome as well. I won’t lie, but there’s something about Mario+Sonic karting that sounds so perfect.
@Dante – It could not be another SEGA All Stars. We JUST had one! One thing is for sure, if we are getting a Sonic vs. Mario all stars, then we can all bet that it is being developed by a different studio. I doubt SUMO could work so fast.
A new Sega All Stars this year seems like a more logical possibility than 2 Mario and Sonic crossovers the same year and around the same season.
I’ve got my money on a 3DS exclusive being developed by another studio.
Cool i was afraid people withjyt a wii y were gona jave to wait years for a new sonic game. I tjink tgis is really good news cyz nintndo owners need some attention i mean all tjey nirmaly get is M&S and crapy ports.lol srry for tje typos looks like my pjone is broken jaja
@Dante – 2 Mario and Sonics’ in a year? You have incorrect information.
A Mario and Sonic, since 2007, has been coming out ever 2 YEARS. Sorry, but get your facts right before trying to start an obvious argument. :/
I don’t know if english is your native lenguage or not but you have serious reading problems.
When I said “2 Mario and Sonic crossovers the same year” I was refering to how ridiculous your idea of a Mario and Sonic racing game sounds because it would have to be released near the end of this year along Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 OWG thus making 2 M&S crossovers
What about that boxed game….?
It’s Sonic Lost World.
I was born learning Spanish, but to this day, I know more English than I do Spanish.
My bad that I read it wrong, but it is no real reason to get mad at a person for overlooking ONE word. Still sorry, though.
And what you call ridiculous is what I call plausible. Just because 2 crossovers in a year have never happened, does not mean that it cannot happen.
I’m not mad, just though that was kind of ridiculous, also spanish is my first lenguage since I was born, I’m mexican.
I think Sega might be doing this to get the partnership with Nintendo over with quickly so they can also create games for other consoles.
sonic in the next super smash bros game confirmed?
Gottareleasegamesfasterfasterfaster…
Sonic X the video game.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lol
Chances are the 3rd sonic game is the Taxman and 3DS Sonic 1 port.
I mean technically we ARE in 2013 so…
Kirby And Sonic Air Riders.
Calling it.
@Ashton – Hardly has anything going for it? Smash Bros., Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Mario Kart, Wind Waker, and many, MANY more.
Either you’re a Nintendo troll, or you just don’t know what a quality game is.
It also seems like you’re using Sonic 1 as your excuse to make yourself feel better that no other cool Sonic game will come to it, when you OBVIOUSLY have no idea. Don’t you think that if it was Sonic 1 3DS, that it would already have been said by SEGA. :/
What excuse? What are you even ranting about anyway?
I honestly don’t think that Sonic appearing in the new Smash Bros. or Mario Kart really counts as a Sonic game, also it looks like the 3 games would indeed cannibalize their sales because they will probably come out around the holiday season, wonder if that information is correct (I know it’s from an official source but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a mistake).
Told you guys.
@Dante – Alright, well I respect your opinion. I hope we’re cool. 🙂
