Ian Flynn Confirms That IDW Sonic Comics Will Not Have Archie Sonic Characters He Created
We have finally gotten our first solid insight on the cast of characters that will be in the era of IDW Sonic, and it’s not good news.
At 42:50 or so in the latest BumbleKast episode, which we’ve included below, the Q&A portion of the video begins. Only two questions were asked, the first being whether the Sonic characters that Ian Flynn created in the Archie Sonic comics would carry over to IDW’s Sonic comics. This includes characters such as Coral, Razor, Spike/Sonar/Trevor, Eclipse, Relic, Thunderbolt and Conquering Storm. Ian’s response? “I’m going to say no. This is a new Sonic book. It’s a new direction, new publisher, new, new, new, new, new, new, new”.
While this doesn’t necessarily confirm the end of the Freedom Fighters, this news doesn’t reassure anyone either. In fact, this could easily leave a bad taste in the mouths of many Freedom Fighters fans. It’s a sign, if what Ian said is any indicator, that the IDW Sonic era will be a lot more of a clean slate than initially thought.
Sadly, it doesn’t seem like the Sonic comics are ending the year on a good note.
This post was originally written by the author for TSSZ News.
Not surprised, copyrights and all that. I’d imagine that with Ken Penders’ s-storm, they don’t want to take ANY chances on having characters from the old comics.
Ken Penders AND Scott Fullop
But Karl Bollers and Frank Storm had no problems with their Sonic characters. And Penders first volume of the Lara-Su Chronicled graphic novel series with app is due anytime soon – even when 2018 begins!
Nobody cares about Ken Penders’s characters trough
Nonsensical twaddle. Copyright here is exceedingly clear: SEGA owns everything that Flynn created. He definitively signed over all rights, and he acknowledged it, and there can be no doubt that SEGA was doubly certain that all remaining staff signed the right documents after Penders started making a fuss. Whatever the reasoning may be, Ian isn’t afraid that he failed to give SEGA the rights to his characters.
Let’s not give a fuss to Ian – I WANT SALLY ACORN AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS TO BE PART OF IDW SONIC! LET’S LET IAN AND/OR SEGA AND/OR IDW HEED OUR HOPES!
The lack of the Freedom Fighters will allow for more original storylines and ideas to prosper, so it’s not all doom and gloom. By wiping the slate clean and focusing on a smaller cast of far more recognisable characters than the Freedom Fighters, the comics can appeal to a much more wider audience.
I think Ian’s lying about no Freedom Fighters in IDW Sonic! He should not write for IDW Sonic and have IDW get a better writer and have him keep the Freedom Fighters for IDW Sonic – even Sally Acorn!
He haven’t talked about the Freedom Fighter, so calm down. Maybe they won’t be there, maybe they will, he didn’t say anything about that.
You mean FREEDOM FIGHTERS, Sally Acorn had better make it to IDW Sonic!
I don’t want Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters to be shut out of IDW Sonic! Is Ian lying?
I don’t think the addition of Sally and the Freedom Fighters will be under Ian’s control. While he did make developments for the comics (like the marriage of Antoine and Bunnie), he did not make the SatAM characters. As they are Sega property, their fate will end up being decided by Sega. So don’t bash Ian if they never appear.
So who will make the ultimate decision that Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters will be part of IDW Sonic the Hedgehog after or around the time the comic is launched? IDW? Ian Flynn? Sega? One of the above? Some of the above? All of the above?
Maybe if the Freedom Fighters do make it to IDW Sonic, will Antoine and Bunnie stay married? Maybe Sonic will finally marry Sally Acorn and not Amy Rose. I also would like to see Lupe of the Wolf Pack marry someone who may appear in IDW Sonic that appeared in a few Season 2 Sonic Sat AM episodes – Ari the Ram (of the Zodiac Freedom Fighters?). Remember, Lupe’s husband Lobo got removed from the Ken Penders Sonic creation list!
For the record, Ari appeared in these Season 2Sonic Sat AM episodes: “Game Guy”, “The Void”, “Cry of the Wolf”, and the final Sonic Sat AM episode “The Doomsday Project” (there was a scene where Ari and Lupe were riding on Dulcy Dragon until the Swatbots came to surround them).
Why do you say he is “lying” ? He haven’t said anything about the Freedom Fighter.
He only said HIS characters aren’t coming back. He didn’t create Sally, Antoine, Bunnie, Rotor, etc. Those are all characters originally from SatAM and owned by Sega. His interpretation of Nicole might be gone though…it’s a shame because I totally shipped her with Sally.
@Encylcopaediadrama xD more Original ? you really believe that nonsense ? ,They’ve literally had 3 comic series like that Sonic Boom Sonic Alternate Universe. and had nothing but the game cast in various minimalist world
It did not Create more orignal Universes , it pander to game fans and created “very tiny universes ” That stuck to very generic story about sonic vs robotnik then they ran out of story ideas
Since most people understand you can’t make a damn story with 4 game character .
The reason sonic comic survived while every game comic went bankrupt is they actually made a story universe . Not just wank off to nostigal of game fans who wanted to see characters appear , while bitching any time they added a new character who didn’t appear in the bare minmal storytelling of the game .
lol you don’t focus on “less character “if your trying to be orignal most video game fans bitch and moan when they add new character then complain when there crappy comic is cancelled since the writers never made an actual world just , random one shot story about the shallow story of the games
Couldn’t Ian Flynn get along with Sonic and Sega and IDW so that Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters become a part of IDW Sonic, even in a spin-off series or something like that?
Ian did not create Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters, Sega did for DIC Sat AM and the comics!
He did not, but a lot of things concerning them he did create for the comic,. Bunnie and Antoine’s marriage and NICOLE having a holographic body being two of them.
Maybe IDW should fire Ian and get a better IDW Sonic writer and keep the Freedom Fighters – especially Sally Acorn – after the IDW Sonic title is launched!
Isn’t that a little too extreme? I mean, i understand putting flynn on the chopping block if he has been acting like a douce, but kicking him out because Sally and the freedom fighters might not appear in the IDW comics? (The chance of them appearing is probably out of his controll, btw.) Really? And this is coming from someone who doesn’t give two shits about Ian, sally, or the freedom fighters.
Don’t see how that would increase the odds of them appearing in the comic. I think who is going to show up is more Sega’s call than Ian’s
You sound like a broken record. Saying nearly the exact same thing over and over isn’t going to make it come true. Look at how many posts you made on this article alone.
Nobody said he did.
Hope Ian’s next Bumblekast will mention the real Freedom Fighters fate in IDW Sonic.
No offense to anyone, but I think most people don’t really have an interest in these characters. Most just want
The Freedom Figthers.
Maybe IDW should have not hired Ian in the first place!
So we never find out what happens to Cassie? and we never get to see Cove again? not even Thunderbolt? or Gold? the first confirmed canon LGBT character in Sonic the hedgehog ? great just great..sigh
Gold the Ternac (sp.?) wasn’t created by Ian, I guess…
Yes she was.
So Gold is out…
And since Ian Flynn is recovering from post New Year’s illness, I hope he approves Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters to be in IDW Sonic at the time of the 2018 IDW Sonic comic relaunch when he feels well enough or something like that. I DEFINATELY WANT, REPEAT, DEFINATELY WANT SALLY ACORN AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS (Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine, and Rotor) TO BE PART OF THE IDW SONIC THE HEDGEHOG COMIC BOOK BECAUSE FANS WANT THEM DESPITE IDW GIVING A STAY TUNED STATEMENT DURING THE OCTOBER 2017 IDW SONIC TOWN HALL PANEL AT THE 2017 NEW YORK COMIC CON! THAT’S HAS BEEN MY MAIN HOPE FOR UMPTEEN TIMES OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT SINCE IDW ACQUIRED THE SONIC COMIC BOOK RIGHTS AFTER ARCHIE COMICS LOST THE RIGHTS TO SONIC THE HEDGEHOG IN COMIC BOOK FORM IN 2017!!! NOBODY HAS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS MUCH!!!!! (Understand already? Okay, okay…now on with the peace and waiting until the first IDW Sonic issues get released in April 2018 barring a last minute delay with Ian and/or IDW…)
That’s where your wrong, a lot of people did like characters like Relic, Thunderbolt and Cove! Cove and Cassie had their own arc going that wont even be revolved
Was a Cove/Cassie arc planned for Archie Sonic comic books before Archie comics lost the contract with Sega this 2017 year?
WOOOO! I was worried that the Freedom Fighters would be a part of the cast IDW Sonic, but I’m glad they aren’t. Even though Flynn is still the writer, I’d like to see how he depicts the Sonic crew and what stories and arcs we’ll explore
I DISAGREE! Let’s rally round the flag to have Ian get Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters in IDW Sonic or else Ian should not write ever for IDW Sonic and get a better writer who may approve Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters in IDW Sonic.
You are welcome to disagree, and while my opinion is on the minor end of things, I have never found myself being heavily attached to the Freedom Fighters. Sure the stories were interesting, but I feel they are better off without Sonic’s name attached to them. I just want to see more of Sonic and his gang, and not more of the Sally-obsessed writing.
None of the Freedom Fighters are Post Reboot character Ian created.
So nothing he said means they can’t show up.I would not bet on it however.
Maybe if we all email Ian Flynn via his Bumblekast email he might agree to use Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters in IDW Sonic with our wishes after IDW Sonic first issues are launched. Ian’s Facebook, Ian’s Twitter, and Ian’s Patreon might help too…
I don’t think it’s Ian’s choice no matter what the situation is. Don’t harass him.
Let’s be honest here. This was very likely. New publisher new slate new era. Let’s hope it’s amazi g maybe in the far future they may appear once some red tape has been passed.
The Freedom Fighters – even Sally Acorn – are not under Ian Flynn’s red tape!
True, but again that is Sega’s call not Ian’s. I am sure Ian would love to include them but if Sega says no there is not much he can do.
We’ll see what Ian agrees. I do still want Sally Acorn in IDW Sonic!
Sega and Ian have got to say yes on Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters to be part of IDW Sonic starting in 2018! Hope a social media circus helps!
Oh yeah !
Finally a serious and official story !!
HOW SERIOUS CAN IT BE?
It’ll have new character, and as he is the writer, they will be by him. Instead of having the older character by him, it’ll be new character by him.
So what the difference here, and how it’ll be “more official” ? (and by more serious, most of the recent game are less serious than the stories that involve Archie’s original character, so…)
I hope they change their minds. There are so many good characters that come from the show/comics that need more attention.
Especially Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters (Bunnie, Antoine, and Rotor) that I am still yearning for if Ian Flynn approves!
I’m sorry but this is about as dumb as Marvel trying to write off the x-men and the rest of the mutants. Seriously if the freedom fighters are taken out I don’t see how Idw will compensate.
Marvel retired the Fantastic Four some years back.
Recent marvel issues imply they’re bringing Reed and Sue back (most likely now that disney owns fox television/movies).
At the most, the comic is just going to be about a blue hedgehog (and a few characters in the Sonic games).
But I hope Ian, Sega, and IDW agree on Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters to be in IDW Sonic after the comic is launched!
Damn, Thunderbolt’s the only character I liked that he created.
But… meh. Everyone that I had connections with were in Penders run. Like Scourge.
Also think of it like this.
New publisher New Canon with no strings attached. The Fleetway verse died a slow death back in 2000, The Arhcieverse died a slow death now a new one begins
Maybe a second Sonic title involving the Freedom Fighters at the same time after Sonic’s launch by IDW?
You obsessively post the same vapid nonsense over and over, you’re either a bot or mentally ill.
This isn’t mentally ill: Did Ian Flynn or Sega create Tikal (She appeared in a Sonic X episode as I remember)
@DTH1971
Sonic team created Tikal, dumbass. And technically, she appered in like 3 sonic x episodes. (Or maybe 4. I don’t actually remember.)
This makes me 90% pessimistic, I like the egg bosses.
I’d be nice if IDW did their own thing while running a 2nd comic wrapping up the post-reboot stuff with one last long arc so everyone screaming “clean slate, no freedom fighters, only game cast” can have their comic, us who were shafted get a resolution then can move on to the new story but rarely do things go the way I want them to.
How about “Clean slate, keep Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters with the game cast”?
Wouldn’t a pure “clean state” not include the freedom fighters at all?
I disagree, I WANT SALLY ACORN AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS TO BE PART OF IDW SONIC! EVEN IN THE CLEAN SLATE FROM IDW! Sega of America commissioned them, you know! (Hope Ian listens…)
I’m pretty sure a pure “clean slate” of the sonic comic wouldn’t include the freedom figthers because, at the end of the day, their not considered part of core cast of sonic characters. Sonic, his friends, and eggman are.
And what’s with the constant hate boner for Flynn? I’m pretty sure that 1. He doesn’t have control over who gets in the IDW comics or not. Sega does, since they own sonic. And 2. I’m sure Flynn boy would jump at the first chance to put his (and by the sounds of it, your) chipmunk waifu and her freedom fighting friends in the new comic, so don’t go on a massive assault on Ian if the freedom fighters don’t get in the IDW comics.
I don’t care! Ian Flynn and IDW must, repeat, must agree on Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters being part of IDW Sonic after its launch in April 2018 even if is a clean slate or something like that.
And what do you mean few of us Sonic fans hate Ian Flynn? I know Ian Flynn is also working on the new Cosmo comic book for former Sonic comic publisher Archie comics in which the first Cosmo issue comes out this January 2018 month (Tracy Yardley and Jamal Peppers – former Archie Sonic artists – are also working on the Sonic comic)
Let Ian, IDW, and Sega decide on this mostly…OK, DUH?
(Boy, why did Ian lay off his Sonic creations such as Conquering Storm in the first place? He may or may not turn IDW Sonic into a trainwreck or something like that after the comic is launched a few months from now)
And IDW wouldn’t care about CLEAN SLATE!
Now if Sega can get Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters in future Sega Sonic games…
It’s this simple; if Sega tells Ian and IDW that they don’t want the Fredon Fighters used AT ALL, then Ian or any other writer will have to abide by SEGA’s RULES. If not, SEGA will CANCEL the IDW comic just like they canceled the Archie line. So, wait and see is all you can do. Emailing Ian at his Bumbleverse will change NOTHING. Sega knows but Sega of America has no call; it’s SEGA of JAPAN who has the final say in all Sonic and the mentality they have always had, if SEGA of Japan didn’t create it, then it doesn’t matter. You’ll have to wait and see about the FF being included.
There’s Sega of America, too! Sega created Sally, Bunnie, Antione, and Rotor for Sonic SatAM, Sonic Archie comics, and even Sonic Spinball! That’s why I still want Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters to be part of IDW Sonic and maybe future Sega made Sonic games! Ian should listen to us Sonic fans and the 2 country Segas (USA and Japan) so they can agree to use Sally and the Freedom Fighters! We’ll see! I don’t IDW Sonic to be cancelled before the first issues come out (unless IDW delays the comics launch for a month or two or three). I wish Ian would listen…
And Sega’s rules my foot! Can’t Sega ever agree on Sally Acorn even for IDW Sonic?
Another idea: Maybe IDW should delay the launch of the Sonic comic book until June or July 2018 so Ian Flynn can take a month or two before the first issues go to press to agree with IDW and Sega to have Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters be part of IDW Sonic at the time of IDW’s Sonic comic book launch. Do you think that’s possible?
Man will you ever shut up?! You’re obsessed with this furry female chipmunk!!
So what if the FFs are not in the comic?? I can’t care less about them!! It’s SEGA of Japan who decides, not Flynn!! Flynn can’t disobey his employers and risk his job to satisfy your urges!!
Sorry if I’m rude, but can’t you understand that IT’S NOT FLYNN, NOR IDW WHO DECIDE, IT’S SEGA??
I thought it was all of the above (Ian Flynn/IDW/Sega USA/Sega Japan) – Can someone else agree on this??
I thought it was the decisions Sega of America, Sega of Japan, IDW, and/or Ian Flynn can make! Let one or almost all of them agree or disagree on Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters themselves if they can!
Calm down.
Someone in the comments is not entirely in their right mind.
I wish Ian Flynn would tell the truth whether or not he decides with IDW and Sega wishes to use Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters in IDW Sonic. Even if it is a spin off comic series or something like that. I know I am still desperate to see Sally Acorn in IDW Sonic.
Be glad we won’t see Conquering Storm in Sonic anymore with Ian’s agreement.
Oh my god
A plan B for Ian Flynn: How about if Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters don’t make it to the IDW Sonic comic book have Sally Acorn and her Freedom Fighter partners be part of a new FREEDOM FIGHTERS newspaper comic strip distributed by Tribune Content Agency or Andrews McMeel or King Features or Creators.com – It could be seperate from the Sonic world or something like that.
so they are just again returning to pre genesis wave
so we are back to penders era, but with no penders era characters…. yikes mobius just got a fuck ton more empty again.
Really? Does this mean IDW, Ian, and Sega finally approved Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters to be in IDW Sonic and back to their pre SUPER GENESIS WAVE looks?
ALSO: I learned it’s not Ian Flynn who decides on the fate of using the Freedom Fighters (including Sally Acorn) in IDW Sonic after the comic’s 2018 launch – It’s up to IDW and/or Sega.
While I do believe that DTH has been overdoing it with the spam, shouting at someone in caps and telling them to “shut up” doesn’t help matters. You calling him a “dumbass” and being snarky doesn’t help matters either. DTH wasn’t shouting in caps, telling people to shut up, calling anyone dumbasses, and he wasn’t using “slander”. And I read every single one of his comments. So, even though he was making a lot of comments, it didn’t warrant a response from me. What did warrant a response is what I already explained.
Enough. And by the way, directing your nasty behavior towards me because I didn’t censor him doesn’t help your case at all.
DTH, it took you how long before realized Flynn had no say in the FFs inclusion, when everyone stated this to you repeatedly. It baffles my mind.
Seriously. No more FFs.
But there may be FFs! Sega and IDW have to agree.
