Fan Fridays: Sonic Wrecks
Last week, the Sonic community found out that long-running fan site Sonic Wrecks will be closing its doors next year. Although it was always more of a niche presence in the community, the site consistently provided a unique perspective on all things Sonic and Sega. With that in mind, this week’s Fan Fridays will honor Sonic Wrecks, its creator, and its contributions to the Sonic fan base.
Sonic Wrecks was formed in 2004 when founder Kevin Eva (otherwise known as ArchangelUK) discovered his desire to contribute to the Sonic community in a different way. Over the years, the site expanded and even briefly served as the #1 worldwide Sonic fan site for a brief time. It is now home to tons of official images, wallpapers, and even manuals from Sonic games past and present. It also houses the site’s podcast, Radio Redux, as well as the feature that may well be the main attraction: its comic series. Since its inception, Sonic Wrecks has run a series of paneled comics that have poked fun at everything from Eddie Lebron’s fan film to Sonic Adventure itself. They are some of the best fan-made Sonic comics on the web, and we highly encourage you to check them out if you haven’t done so already.
The site will live on to some degree as ArchangelUK plans to fold its archived content into his new endeavor, Last Minute Continue. Since it won’t shut down until July of next year, this is by no means a final goodbye to Sonic Wrecks. However, with so much buzz about its impending closure, we thought now was as good a time as any to present this little retrospective. All of us here at TSSZ wish ArchangelUK the best as he works toward bigger and better things, and we hope you’ll help make the last year of Sonic Wrecks its best one ever. At any rate, and as you’re no doubt aware by now, we’re always on the lookout for fan works to spotlight, so if you have a project you want the world to know about, send us a link at fansonfriday@tssznews.com!
