Fan Fridays: Sonic Freedom, Revived
With all the hype surrounding the Sonic movie, we missed the release of an updated trailer for the Toei Sonic-inspired Sonic Freedom, which was released last month. In our current climate of cancellations and uncertainty, we thought it would be worth showcasing now.
Some background: Sonic Freedom was first announced as a proof of concept in 2016 by tripplejaz based off the Toei produced animated Sonic from the Sonic CD cutscenes. According to the artist, more than 300 hours of effort was put into the idea at the time.
Fast forward to last month–and most assuredly hundreds of hours of more labor–and it now appears tripplejaz has joined up with marmitoTH to produced a Unity-based demo.
There’s no clear timetable for a release other than for later this year–and as with all fan games, anything and everything is subject to change–but given that over 100,000 people have watched the above trailer so far on Twitter, plus another 300,000 on YouTube, there clearly is interest in Sonic Freedom as the next great project to come out of our community. We’ll do a better job going forward monitoring its progress.

I would pay lots of cash to play a official Sonic game like this. This gives me the vibes I get from ‘2D animated’ games like Wario Land: The Shake Dimension, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, and Streets of Rage 4 and I love it! 🙂
