EDITORIAL: Chu Chu Rocket: Why All The Hype?
Before you get all flustered up about the title, realize that I’m for the hype.
In Japan, when Chu Chu Rocket was released in November, people went bananas over the game. It shot to #1 for sales for the week it was released, and has been steadily selling ever since. But, think of the concept here: a simple cat and mouse puzzle game. It barely harnesses any of the DC’s power, yet we all want it so much. Why is that?
Well, maybe it’s because the game is simply pure fun. The simplest of things can make for hours of enjoyment by all. Remember the Bomberman series and how popular it was for its multi-player value? Well, one could argue CCR is just like that. You can have a simple four-player battle, or play over the upcoming DC Network.
What does this prove? You don’t need glitzy graphics or gameplay detail to the max, you just need a concept that the public will like. Trying to get mice to a rocket is a challenging idea that, apparently, people like. Sonic Team may have another hit on their hands and not even know it.
Maybe this is a lesson for those planning to make fan games–perhaps you should not stick with the original Sonic concept. Try something different. As you should know, I’ve given games that are Pong like in nature high marks. Why? Because it’s fun and original.
So, we’ll see what happens when CCR comes out. Will it succeed? I think so. But only your purchase will influence that.
