Sonic Merchandise Website Officially Opens
It’s Black Friday, so we probably should compel you to shop. For a Sonic fan in Europe, the first stop may be the official Sonic Merchandise online store, which went live earlier this week.
The store is meant for Europeans, and is localized to specific countries and languages. Items for sale include old Sonic television series, T-shirts, figurines, posters, and even skins for your iPad 2 or iPhone 4.
Before breaking out the credit card, though, you need to read what Sonic Wrecks uncovered the day of the site’s proper opening. Some data mining apparently uncovered the site’s backend, and that could potentially put your personal data at risk:
Now, this is frankly so basic – especially for a website that handles money – that it somewhat beggars belief. Regardless, there are presently no privacy settings on the directory listing and you can have a nose around in the backend, in the admin set up folders… heck there’s even an (albeit empty) install folder still there on the home directory. I’m not saying that all their financial transactions are available for view, I’m just saying that if someone wanted to hack it to bits they’ve can get a damn good idea of how to go about it.
Things like that don’t exactly breed confidence and I certainly won’t be handing over any card or personal details until such fundamentals are addressed and covered.
The bottom line: If you really want what’s on the site, and it’s the only way you can get the swag, buy at your own risk.
