Fan Fridays: Rocket Ship Resort’s Latest
About two years ago, we featured Skye Meredith, a musician who creates Sonic and Sega-inspired music under the name Rocket Ship Resort. Skye’s been busy since then, and Rocket Ship Resort has a full-length album coming out soon called Megaheart. The album takes cues from pop-punk, JPOP, and electronica, which compliment its clear gaming influences; in some ways, it reminds me of Owl City or Cash Cash. Skye describes the album in the following way:
I wanted to write lyrics that vocalize the most powerful personal experiences I’ve had over the past few years. Homelessness, hopeless romantic-ness, fighting the gender paradigm, buckling under loss – all under the lens of stories I wanna tell with a grin as they go. I’ve never worked harder on the instruments and production in my life, and I set out to make melodies that make you wanna throw a fist in the air and a f**k yeah! from the rooftops… and listen to for a long time, picking out new subtleties, movements, and sounds each time around.

The album’s first single, Mistress Magic, captures much of that intended sound and feel with a very catchy, danceable beat and a fun, lighthearted spirit. Skye had this to say about the track:
I wrote Mistress Magic to sound like a masterful showman with a thousand spotlights spinning in rhythm with the wind. The song is about a magician, highly skilled in his practice, who falls in love with a girl who is truly made of magic. It’s kinda sexy, quite playful, very firey and maybe even a little Jackson-y if you’re keeping score.
We’ve included Mistress Magic below for your listening pleasure, and you really should check it out. Megaheart comes out on June 2nd, and you can pre-order it in full here; and if you do, you’ll get Mistress Magic for free! It includes unique guest artwork by Gashi-Gashi of Adventure Time and Naoto Ohshima, which is pretty cool in and of itself. You can also follow Rocket Ship Resort at its website, on Facebook, on Twitter, and elsewhere. We thank Mike Abiuso for bringing Meagheart to our attention!
