‘I’ve Got 99 Pumpkins But A Witch Ain’t One’ was completed 2/11/06.
Finished a couple of days late due to one thing and another, this comic is SW’s first Halloween special.
The
title comes from the lyrics of the Jay-Z song ’99
Problems’: "I’ve got 99 problems, but a bitch ain’t one."
Shadow’s
house is again featured, last seen on the New Years
Day 2006 comic ‘Fairytale of New Dork’ (#W05). Looks
like he’s had a new door fitted though.
The
number is still 1313 in homage to The Munsters.
Echo
Hawk appears for the first time in a comic for over
a year, the last appearance being a cameo in hedgehog
form in #S05 – ‘Sudden Death Amok Time’. She also appeared
in the comic before that #022 in proper SW comic ‘hawk’
mode.
People
were… insistant there should be a SW Halloween comic
this year.
The
Master Hand & Shadow coexisting? A rare sight indeed.
As
with Hawk, this is the first time the Master Hand has
been seen in some considerable time (#S06 Xmas 2005
special).
This
comic was going to be a wreckslet, but in the end AAUK
threw several of his ideas for what could be a SW halloween
comic together to make a large special.
"I
am the clown with a tearaway face." is sung by
the character of the same name in the song ‘This
is Halloween’ from ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’
‘You
are a child’s plaything!’ is
a line from Toy Story which also of course features
Mr. Potato Head.
The
parody of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video has a few
little homages. For a start Shadow is dressed as Jackson
is in the vid. He also is wearing the jeweled white
glove on his left hand compared to his right which is
bare.
Does
this mean though that no mere mortal can resist the
evil of Vanilla? I always thought she looked too innocent…
The
Maria we meet is a different Maria sprite to the one
we meet in previous SW comic #003 – ‘I Can’t Get No
Satisfaction’. She’s an edit of Megaman/Rockman’s sister
Roll with lengthened hair and the traditional cobalt
blue dress.
Oh
well Maria, better luck next time
You
are now entering Disclaimerville
Population = YOU.
The
description of the tramp is a reference to Don Mclean’s ‘American Pie’.
‘Red
and black or slimy green.’ Is
another line from ‘This is Halloween’. The following
remark about pumpkin patches is also about TNBC.
The
line about the son of a fishmonger is a reference to
Victor from Tim Burton’s ‘The Corpse Bride’.
‘With
their tanks and their bombs, and their bombs and their
guns’ is a line from ‘Zombie’ by The Cranberries.
The
cabbage remarks are about Cabbage Patch Dolls.
‘A
tragic tale of romance, passion and a murder most foul.’
Is Bonejangles’ second line from ‘The Corpse Bride’ and the lead in to the song ‘Remains of the Day’.
The
picture is a mock of the Pan European Gaming Institute’s
rating system, known as PEGI.
